NSW: On the spot fines soon to be trialled at northern beaches
Northern beachgoers who refuse to swim between the flags could find themselves with
hefty fines from lifeguards under a new move by a Sydney council.
Fines ranging between $60 and $220 will be trialled by Warringah Council from February
26, and will be in effect until the end of the swimming season in April.
Beaches between North Narrabeen and Freshwater come under the council's new regulations.
Warringah Council lifeguard spokesman CLINTON ROSE says it's a move to improve the
efficiency of the way they manage the beaches.
He says up until now, only council rangers could issue fines.
He says the trial gives the power to issue fines to lifeguards who are working right
on the coalface, on the beach, to people who are doing the wrong thing.
Previously, lifeguards could only advise beachgoers of their responsibilities under
a variety of state laws.
