Baerga Makes History

Carlos Baerga became the first player in major league history tohit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same inning as theCleveland Indians erupted for nine runs in the seventh inningThursday to rout the visiting New York Yankees 15-5.

Baerga hit a two-run home run batting right-handed off SteveHowe to put the Indians ahead 8-5 with no outs in the seventh, thenhit a bases-empty home run batting left-handed against Steve Farrwith two outs in the inning.

Baerga is the first Indians player to hit two home runs in aninning. The feat, which has been accomplished 26 times in themajors, last was done by then-Boston Red Sox star Ellis Burks on Aug.27, 1990. …
